Book Report Alternatives

0

| By : Shannan | In : ,

For those of us who were educated through the public school system, our creativity may be slightly stunted when considering book report options other than the standard "report form."  Using a standard reporting form can limit your child's opportunity to demonstrate more advanced comprehension and interpretation.

There are many other creative and fun options that I've found online, below is a sampling . Edit these lists to suit your children, methods, and preferences.  I keep a list of options that I am willing to accept in my teacher binder for quick reference.

Resources:
HomeschoolingFamilies.com 46 Alternatives to writing a book report.

My Favorites:
6. If a journey was involved, draw a map with explanatory notes of significant places.
10. Keep a reading journal and record your thoughts at the end of each period of reading.
12. Draw a comic-book page complete with bubble-style conversations showing an incident in your book.
14. Make a travel brochure inviting tourists to visit the setting of the book. What types of activities would there be for them to attend?
17. Prepare a list of 15 to 20 questions for use in determining if other people have read the book carefully.
19. Write a diary as the main character would write it to explain the events of the story.
20. Make a dictionary containing 20 or more difficult words from the book.
32. Create a board game based on events and characters in the book you read. Your game should include the following: a game board, a rule sheet and clear directions, events and characters from the story. 33. Make models of three objects which were important in the book you read. On a card attached to each model, tell why that object was important in the book.
37. Complete a series of five drawings that show five of the major events in the plot of the book you read. Write captions for each drawing so that the illustrations can be understood by someone who did not read the book.
39. Plan a party for the characters in the book you read. In order to do this, complete each of the following tasks: (a) Design an invitation to the party which would appeal to all of the characters. (b) Tell what food you would serve and why. (c) Tell what games or entertainment you will provide and why your choices are appropriate. (d) Tell how three of the characters will act at the party. (e) What kind of a party is this? (birthday, housewarming, un-birthday, anniversary, etc.)
40. List five of the main characters from the book you read. Give three examples of what each character learned or did not learn in the book.

    Homeschooling with Toddlers

    0

    | By : Shannan | In : ,

Usually I post Free or Low-Cost resources.  But this resource is worth the investment (as low as $15) for someone who is willing to organize it.

This is great for keeping your busy toddlers occupied while you are homeschooling, at the Doctor's office, or anywhere you need to occupy their busy hands.  Activity Bags.

Activity bags are self-guided activities that fit into a gallon size bag.  They can be "assigned" to your toddler during school time, etc.  The best and least expensive way to go about accumulating your activity bags is to organize a swap.

First, purchase the book of activities from Activity Bags. The books come in a variety of formats and vary in cost.

Next, organize an Activity Bag Swap with your co-op or support group.

Organizing a Swap isn't too complicated.  First you find a group of interested moms (groups of about 20-30 is an ideal size). They can choose one game from the book or you can assign games.

Each mother make enough of that one game as there are mothers in the group. This is a huge cost savings because each mom is purchasing only the items required for the one game, in bulk, and should only spend about $1 for each bag.

On swap day, put out one paper grocery bag for each mother.   Each participant places one Activity Bag into a paper bag for each of the other swappers.  In the end, each mother goes home with a bag full of activities to occupy their little ones.

It was a huge hit in our co-op and I highly recommend it.

    The Homeschool Mother's Journal
    In my life this week...

My youngest daughter lost her 6th tooth, they are dropping like flies!  One of the churches here had a roller party at a nearby roller rink, haven't been on a set of wheels since I was a kid!  It was the first time for the girls and it was quite funny, wobbly me trying to support another little wobbly child.

A friend of mine is  considering homeschooling, its been a joy to answer some of her questions.  I remember the scary stage, when you are terrified you might destroy your children.

    In our homeschool this week...
The girls have gotten a lot of extra outside time in the awesome weather, so we've been schooling in the afternoon.  Watching the brave robins has been fun, they will get fairly close, within 10 feet.  And seeing the little eaglets and watching the Eagles feed them has been exciting.

Places we're going and people we're seeing...

We went over to the youth center to help DH this week. Otherwise, close to home as usual.

My favorite thing this week was...
The beautiful weather that allowed us to do our schooling outside.  I am looking forward to making it a more regular activity.

    What's working/not working for us...

Everything seems to be running very smoothly, nothing I'd like to change.

    Homeschool questions/thoughts...
    Question:
Wondering how many of you attend a homeschool convention and what are your reasons for attending?

A photo, video, link, or quote to share...

    Science Literature for Children

    0

    | By : Shannan | In : , ,

Here is a great series of books written in 1898 -1901 by Clara Dillingham Pierson.  And as always, FREE to download.

My children were captivated by the characters in her book, Among the Farmyard People, Clara is very creative with the interaction between the different characters.  She introduced us to the wise Blind Horse, the proud Peacock, the geese who insist that they give their feathers to the farmer and do not have to work for their food and many other farm dwellers.  In each chapter, not only do we learn about the animals behavior, food, sounds, predators, etc; the characters also learn a valuable lesson about life, obedience, kindness, and more. I highly recommend her series.

Below is the introduction to her book titled Among the Meadow People:

"Many of these stories of field life were written for the little ones of my kindergarten, and they gave so much pleasure, and aroused such a new interest in "the meadow people," that it has seemed wise to collect and add to the original number and send them out to a larger circle of boys and girls."
"All mothers and teachers hear the cry for "just one more," and find that there are times when the bewitching tales of animals, fairies, and "really truly" children are all exhausted, and tired imagination will not supply another. In selecting the tiny creatures of field and garden for the characters in this book, I have remembered with pleasure the way in which my 6 loyal pupils befriended stray crickets and grasshoppers, their intense appreciation of the new realm of fancy and observation, and the eagerness and attention with which they sought Mother Nature, the most wonderful and tireless of all story-tellers."

    ~Clara Dillingham Pierson
    Titles in this series include:
    • Among the Meadow People
    • Among the Farmyard People
    • Among the Pond People
    • Among the Forest People
    • Among the Night People
You can download these books from Gutenburg.

    Enjoy.
